Why does Credit Suisse care so much about STEM skills?

(Science, technology, engineering and mathematics) are the foundations of the industrial and corporate world and whilst they are some of the most important subjects, students often overlook them. It is a highly desirable skill-set that is in high demand by employers, including us.

We frequently hear about the opportunities and challenges of closing the gaps in STEM (Science Technology Engineering Mathematics) education and employment. For Credit Suisse, increasing the diversity of our global workforce is an important commitment. The research conducted by the bank and others is clear: companies with a diverse workforce, including having women in senior management roles, perform better than those that do not.

Today women make up half the workforce, but only 24% of these women are in jobs relating to STEM subjects.  At Credit Suisse we dedicate our time to providing opportunities to students studying to enter a career in IT. We have a Technical Analyst program, which provides us with a pipeline to develop and grow and an active IT Women’s Council, which is a strategic, proactive, empowering, solution-oriented business network that aims to attract, retain and promote women by providing and facilitating opportunities for professional development within Technology.

Earlier this year Credit Suisse entered into a partnership with US-based organization STEMconnector, with Laura Barrowman, Group Chief Technology Officer, STEM advocate and IT Women’s Council Global Sponsor as Credit Suisse’s Executive Champion. This organization is both a resource and service provider, designed to link “all things STEM” through initiatives and a portfolio of products. STEMconnector facilitates collaboration between business, government, education providers and non-profit organisations.

Our commitment to STEM is clear, as an organization we are making steps towards increasing the number of women in the finance and technology pipeline, by reaching them at a critical point in their education.
