A trainee hairdresser role is busy. You have to sweep the floor clean the mirrors and sinks regularly as well as making cups of tea and coffee for clients. You progress to shampooing and conditioning and will learn more about styling and cutting as time goes on. You can practise at home on your family and friends.
Optical Assistant role in 1989 was very different from today there was no technology such as computers or mobile telephones, everything was handwritten with orders and records kept and updated manually . Customer service and communication skills were still key though. I loved helping patients to choose new spectacles, over the years people became more interested in glasses as a fashion accessory not just something that would help them see. Learning all about the different types of lenses available from Bifocals to varifocals was interesting as well as the new types of contact lenses.
The start of my incredible career . I was very lucky to open my own Specsavers store with my business partner , we had 4 members of staff and it was very exciting opening a new business together. We wanted to be the Opticians that was trusted.

There was little guidance available to me at school level not like the support and back up available today.
I would make sure that I worked harder at passing my exams. I would take time to decide on a future career.
