I kept records of patients and booking appointments for them. The NHS Hospital was a very structured organisation to work for. It was like an apprenticeship, so I didn't get paid much about £27 and I gave my Mum £10 a week for board.
Purchase Ledger Clerk, Ford and Slater, Peterborough
I learnt about accounts and profits and losses. Generating a debtors list of companies that owed us money and asking for payment. It was maths based so I had to have a test to get the job, but I did and passed it. I didn't know how important this job was to me at the time but as it was working with accounts and understanding debts and collecting for cash flow when I had my own business later I already knew about accounting and how important maths and cash flow were to keep a business running.
Civil Servant Clerical Assistant, Ministry of Defense, Gosport
I was interviewed by 5 top official Navy personnel who asked me all sorts of questions, I had to have a medical and I had to pass a test to be accepted for interview. The MoD is an extremely large government organisation and you must be intelligent and mature to do the work you do. It was interesting as we had security lectures as well and our team of 5 had a supervisor. Sometimes the work was pressured but we dug deep to complete tasks on time and were rewarded sometimes with a box of chocolates to share.
Career Break - to have a baby
I left full-time work to look after my daughter who was 2. I then did temp jobs and worked as a credit control clerk for DD Lamson. I bought a house with my boyfriend and in 1992 I had my second daughter, in 1993 I had twin girls. I became a stay at home mum and because it was so hard financially in 1995 I set up my own business supplying security personnel in Hampshire, West Sussex and Wiltshire.
Dansim Taekwondo, Peterborough
I started my own business because I believed I could be successful and had a good business background. I train people to make them better at their job and better at dealing with difficult situations. I’m the Chief Executive Officer so I make decisions about everything the company does and where it will be in the future. After Uni I wrote training programmes and a book on leadership and management skills. I suppose like most people I learnt the hard way, but business is how you: feel, cope, put things behind you and grow your business for the future.

John Mansfield School for Girls, Peterborough
As girls were expected to work until they got married. Life gave me opportunities and some I created myself to look after my family.
I wouldn't do anything differently because my career path was so good I have done things I never knew existed, I've even met Bill Gates.
