Career Break - to have a baby
Business Transfer Manager, Specsavers, Guernsey

Help manage the process of buying and selling our stores. Good to have a desk-based job with no travel, having just returned from maternity leave, and I also reduced my hours to 30.5 hours per week which helps with work/life balance.

Commercial Project Manager, Specsavers, Guernsey

Back managing cross functional projects, including preparing the business for new GDPR data protection regulations and planning for the impacts of Brexit. I also reduced my hours further to 27.5 per week to workaround my childcare arrangements. I'm in work every day though, which helps me to keep on top of things.

International retail optician

I live in a little cottage by the sea with my partner and our daughter. I play lots of music in my spare time (I play the violin and viola), and help to organise a local folk festival, the Sark Folk Festival. I'm also chair of the Healing Music Trust - a charity which arranges for musicians to go into hospitals, care homes and special schools.

Don't be afraid to make things work for you. If your employer is going to get the most out of you, you need to be comfortable so don't be afraid to ask for what you want, or to make the changes needed to make things work how you want - you'll often be surprised with what people will agree to. Working hard is different from being a martyr. Also, trust your instincts - nine times out of ten they will be right.
