Cloud Solution Architect at Microsoft

My favourite part of my job is meeting the different customers. My main account is with healthcare and there are some really exciting projects at the moment.

Hi, I'm Lily 🙂

I'm 18 and doing a degree apprenticeship so I study alongside working at Microsoft. It's great fun and has so many benefits: you gain 4 years of work experience, get no debt from Uni and you're being paid! You also get the opportunity to do exciting projects outside of your role (for example, I'm on the technical team for Modern Muse) as well as attending events. I'd really encourage you to research it!

I'm from the countryside in North Yorkshire so a lot of my hobbies revolve around outdoor sports - my favourite being Gorge Walking! I've been on two Outward Bounds courses which were amazing and really helped develop my confidence as well as achieving the Bronze and Gold Duke of Edinburgh!

Another strong interest of mine is women in tech (and in senior business roles). A couple of months ago, I had the opportunity to talk at DigiGirlz, it was amazing!

Take on as many extra-curricular activities you can - whether it links to your career or not. You never know how it could help your future career with the experience or skills you gain. Careers, especially in technology, change all the time - it's unlikely that you'll stay doing the same job for all your life.

My Education
Bsc Degree Digital and Technology Solutions
University of Roehampton
London, United Kingdom
Mathematics, Physics, Economics, Further and additional maths
Skipton Girls' High School

I love Maths! Solving problems can feel so satisfying, in my job I face challenges every day so being able to apply the skills I learnt in my A-Levels is great!

More about me

Communication is big - you'd think such a technical job wouldn't require so many soft skills but I meet customers all the time and I need to explain technical stuff to them.
Then there are the typical skills you would expect from a computer scientist: problem solving, resilience and patience.

I developed a lot of these skills from extra-curricular activities that helped grow my confidence like Outward Bounds and Gold Duke of Edinburgh.

I wanted to be a Marine Biologist or a Doctor! I had no clue Cloud Solutions Architects existed!

I would research more about options other than Uni - I had no idea about the opportunities with Apprenticeships so my application was pretty last minute.
